EMI Shielding
EMI is electromagnetic interference, also known as radio-frequency interference (RFI) and is caused by an external source that affects the operation of electrical circuits, devices, and systems. EMI shields are designed to protect these circuits and systems from electromagnetic induction, electrostatic coupling, or conduction. These causes of EMI include synthetic, and natural sources and can result either in temporary loss of function to systems or permanent damage and in extreme cases to loss of life.
Modern-day EMI shields include flexible metal screens, wire, and forms that incorporate metal particles coated in silicone rubber for solving sealing and insulation requirements. Where these materials are used in electronic devices, they also protect from mechanical shock and external elements of the operating environment while maintaining electrical conductivity. These generally take the form of EMI shielding gaskets and seals that can be die-cut, water jet cut, or compression molded.
